the black prince

The Telfair Academy in Savannah is one of three buildings that create the Telfair Museums. While  wandering the city, I decided to check it out. I could not believe the amount of art on the walls, it seemed endless for what I thought was a small building. I am kicking myself for not writing an artists name down, but he was featured in the upstairs gallery.  I will find out who it was to post about him because there was a particular painting out of the entire body being exhibited that just stood out from the rest.

I went downstairs into this gigantic main gallery, cathedral ceilings, wood floors, enormous doors and wood trim everywhere.  There was a painting on the right of the room, I started my viewing on the left, so it was almost the last one I would look at.  It was titled The Black Prince of Crecy by Julian Russell Story. I just stared.  That was all I could do. 135in by 205in. Crazy. The brushstrokes, color, mood, symbolism was just all amazing.  I fell in love.  I don't know what else to say.

inspired

I finished reading Just Kids by Patti Smith while I was in Savannah.  It was a really well written book.  I was so impressed by it.  The relationship of two young artists, Patti and Robert Mapplethorpe, pushing each other was really inspiring.  For myself, the book made me call into question how much effort and sacrifice I put into my career as an artist.  Robert is unbelievable with his vision and how he creates.  It needs to be better all the time.  I can relate to that.  Nothing against Patti, but I was drawn to Robert's passion for his work.   His drive.  I want to be like that but can't get myself to commit fully.  I chose some photos of Roberts (I believe they are all is work) that remind me of the book.

First photo was taken be Norman Seeff.

color and texture

I am always on the lookout for interesting walls.  Old houses, buildings, anything with an odd color palette and texture.  Different bricks, wood and crusted, layered paint.  They heavily influence my work.

here i go

Made it to the studio Sunday.  Sat around.  You tubed.  Became discouraged.  Organized.  Mixed some pink and began painting on a piece I stopped working on awhile ago.  Draw and draw again.  Finally, proportions may be correct.  Just the beginning.....

murals in the roc

I went to the public market this weekend and finally was able to take photos of the new murals around the area.  I didn't make it to all of them but here are a few.  Projects like this are great for the city of Rochester.

The bison/human and whale are my favorites out of these.

ships

Our hotel in Savannah was located on the river.  Everyday these enormous ships would make their voyage through carrying a ton of cargo.  If I was in the pool, a single ship could block the view of River Street on the other side of the river.  They are pretty amazing in size.

loved the orange and gigantic lettering of this ship
